The Royal School Dungannon
A happy, family atmosphere in which pupils receive an all-round quality of education preparing them for the rigours and challenges of life at university and in employment
ORIGINS
Founded in 1608 by Royal Charter, The Royal School Dungannon is the oldest Grammar School in Northern Ireland. It is situated on a fine 35-acre estate in beautiful rural surroundings in an ancient fortress town in the centre of the Province. Today, its 650 pupils and 41 members of staff jealously guard its history and reputation for academic, sporting, social and cultural excellence.
PHILOSOPHY
The School provides a high quality academic education, in which the place of the spiritual, sporting and cultural are equally trained and respected. The Boarding Department, as a small unit of about 50 boarders, is constantly over-subscribed. Great efforts are made to create a real family atmosphere. Stress is laid on high standards of behaviour and courtesy within caring relationships, where trust, respect and honesty are cultivated. However, fun and enjoyment are key concepts for staff and pupils alike within a serious approach to the achievement of each individual’s potential. Because of this and the strong links which have been created with boarders’ families, many brothers, sisters and relatives from overseas follow in their siblings’ and parents’ footsteps. Boarders are assisted with extra classes in English and substantial supervised homework sessions.
LOCATION AND FACILITIES
The central position of the School and its motorway link to Belfast, make access to both the Belfast City and International airports very fast (60 and 45 minutes respectively). The large, private campus contains a mixture of old and very new buildings, following a major £9 million rebuild and refurbishing project completed in 2004. The Boarding accommodation is furnished to a high standard of comfort, facilities and equipment. Three Computer Laboratories, a large academic library and spacious Sixth Form study accommodation provide an ideal place of preparation for Higher Education. All the academic subjects have been housed in the most advanced accommodation, with hundreds of new computers, electronic gadgetry and modern apparatus. Four rugby pitches, shooting range and indoor cricket school, two hockey pitches, four tennis courts, an athletics track, Sports Hall, Gymnasium, superb Sixth Form Centre, recording studio, 200-seater lecture theatre, conference facilities and ultra-modern canteen complement the beautiful classrooms suites.
ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
All the normal GCSE and Advanced Level subjects, including Economics, Technology, Politics and Food Science and Technology, may be pursued. Over 90% of the pupils proceed to all the better known Universities in the U.K., including Oxbridge, and in the Republic of Ireland. Some Boarders are happy to return to study in their native country’s universities, having acquired high standards of study, English and life skills. Consistently, Royal School Dungannon has figured in the top two hundred schools in the United Kingdom A level league tables, with two thirds gaining A or B grades in most years.

The major activities are in Music, Drama, Sport and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
